Decker moved to Georgia around the age of fifteen. She had started to write songs, and was making frequent visits to Nashville. Decker was signed to a deal to sign a deal with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records President David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. The first self-titled effort under the moniker Jessie James arrived in August 2009. Jessie James achieved a reasonable amount of popularity and had Wanted reaching at the Top 40 charts. Decker was always a Country performer, but the album was released and promoted was designed with pop audiences in mind. Two more singles off the album stiffed Decker battled with label executives for greater control over her music and her subsequent track Boys in the Summer was a more country-oriented release. The album that Decker released by the title Daughter of a Gypsy and Sweet American Dreams by Mercury Records, was canceled after Mercury saw the poor performances of three of her singles on country radio charts.
